halftone woodcut of wooden Kamakura Buddha statue
BUDDHA (GOLD)
Watercolor woodblock print
13" x 13" (33 x 33 cm)

Buddha, who is believed to have lived in the eastern part of India around the 4th century BCE, is the primary figure in Buddhism and is recognized by Buddhists as an enlightened teacher who attained full Buddhahood and shared his wisdom to help sentient beings end rebirth and suffering. Buddha espoused what he called a Middle Way between sensual indulgence and the severe asceticism that was common for sages in his day. This image is based on a photograph of a wooden "Jizo" statue at Hokai temple in Kamakura Japan. The carving dates to around 1365.
