In 1617-1619 an epidemic thought to be small pox, probably brought by early European explorers, spread through coastal New England, killing an estimated 90% of the native population. The central figure (printed in black), including the words, is from the 1630 seal of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The red shape surrounding the figure is a depiction of the smallpox virus.
