Relics > Halftone Religious Objects

I wanted to work with photo-realistic halftone images of icons and statues from various religious traditions because I like the way the images, much like religion itself, come apart and coalesce depending on your distance from them. I hand carved the blocks with a knife and small u-gouges. This arduous process, trying to make 6,000 perfect circles with my imperfect tools and my shaky hand and my farsighted middle-aged eyes, seems precisely what religion at its best calls forth in a human being — the human striving for something perfect, beautiful and pure in the midst of the imperfection and hardship of life.
