AMERICAN BIBLE STORY
Japanese Woodblock Print
14.75" x 16" (37.5 x 40.6 cm)

In the same the way that some people quote the Bible to add legitimacy and authority to their opinions, present-day Americans of every political persuasion call upon "the founding fathers" to justify their definitions of America and Americans. In my research about colonial New England I noticed many allusions to Bible stories, so this print works with the idea that the early European settler stories have become an American Bible story. I borrowed liberally from an Utamaro shunga (erotic) print to create the couple.
